Brad Elward is an appellate attorney from Washington, Illinois, who previously worked with a 110-plus person law firm based in Peoria. He has concentrated in appellate practice since 1994 and has argued over 235 appellate cases before the Illinois Supreme Court, the Illinois Appellate Court, the Missouri Appellate Court, and the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals, as well as various administrative bodies. He has over 100 published decisions to date.
Mr. Elward has extensive experience in all areas of appellate practice and has handled a large number of interlocutory appeals, forum non conveniens appeals, and appeals before the Illinois Appellate Court, Workers’ Compensation Commission Division. His cases have involved a variety of substantive law areas: appeal bonds; asbestos; civil rights; general negligence (auto and slip-and-fall/premises); commercial law; jurisdiction; medical malpractice; municipal law; products’ liability; and venue. He further served as Senior Motion Writer and Team Leader on a multi-billion dollar diminished value assessment and salvage title class action litigation.
He is Past President of the Illinois Appellate Lawyers’ Association (2013-14), Past Editor-in-Chief of the Illinois Association of Defense Counsel Quarterly publication (2015-16), and is the current co-editor of the IICLE Illinois Civil Appeals: State and Federal, volume.
He has written extensively on appellate practice and has over 45 published articles with various publications, including the Appellate Law Journal, Defense Research Institute, Illinois Defense Counsel Quarterly, Illinois State Bar Journal, Northern Illinois University Law Journal, and Southern Illinois University Law Journal. He is also a published author on military aviation history topics, with 12 books and over 50 articles.
Mr. Elward has presented seminars on a variety of appellate practice topics such as appeal bonds, brief writing, interlocutory appeals, motion practice, and oral argument, and taught as an adjunct in the Illinois Central College Paralegal program. He developed, managed, and was an instructor for the associate training program at his former law firm.
Mr. Elward is licensed to practice in Illinois, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh and Eighth Circuit, and the U.S. District Court for the Central and Southern District.
