About
Charles Schmitz is a graduate of the University of Illinois College of Law. Prior to attending law school, Mr. Schmitz served as an aide to U.S. Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens. Upon graduation from law school, Mr. Schmitz clerked for a U.S. District Judge in the District of Connecticut. Mr. Schmitz then joined the U.S. Department of Justice through the Honors program where he served as a Trial Attorney in the Civil Fraud Section in Washington, D.C. Mr. Schmitz then joined the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Florida as a Criminal Assistant U.S. Attorney, where he prosecuted white collar crime, drug and gun offenses, illegal immigration offenses, and child exploitation offenses. Mr. Schmitz then continued his career as a federal prosecutor with the U.S. Department of Justice as a Trial Attorney in the Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section of the Criminal Division. Mr. Schmitz has tried 12 criminal cases to jury verdict and has practiced in over 20 federal districts nationwide. He now serves as the Resident Legal Advisor and Justice Attaché for the U.S. Embassy in the Republic of Georgia, where he works on rule of law issues, trains foreign prosecutors and law enforcement officers, conducts diplomacy with foreign officials, and advises embassy leadership on Georgian and U.S. legal issues. Mr. Schmitz has taught as an adjunct professor at the University of Illinois College of Law, the George Washington University Law School, Tbilisi State University Law School, and Florida Gulf Coast University for, collectively, over 40 semesters. Mr. Schmitz has taught 14 different courses, and he now focuses on Cybercrime and White Collar Crime.
