Law 797: Video Game Law

The dynamic and interactive nature of video games makes for an uneasy fit with many long-standing legal doctrines. This course will provide an overview of legal issues related to the medium of the video game, including free speech, intellectual property, and regulation through caselaw, law review articles, and other secondary literature in fields such as game studies. Students will also learn how contracting, licensing, and IP enforcement practices have historically shaped the industry and continue to influence the medium.

Sequence and Prerequisites: None. Students will need or need to develop a foundation in one or more areas of law relevant for the course for the work product and lead discussant evaluations, however.

Evaluation: Professional-quality work product, developed in consultation with the professor, such as a memorandum, brief, or law review note. Students are encouraged to choose projects that can be used as writing samples or for submission to scholarship competitions. Participation throughout the seminar; lead discussant for one or more classes.
